We initially realised the need for safe habitat when we were continually told of Hedgehogs scrabbling under garden sheds or into garages or worst still, going under bonfires. 25% of Hedgehogs do not survive from one year to the next. One important reason is insufficient safe habitat. Other reasons are the use of poison, slug pellets, general pesticides, strimmers & bonfires.

Choose a quiet position out of prevailing wind in an area with some cover and pile leaves and short grass around the Hedgehog House, plus two hand fulls of short dry grass and leaves inside the box to initiate a nest. Initial use may be encouraged by placing chopped peanuts/bacon rind in or near the house. Check Hedgehog House annually – Clean in April if possible.
