Fancy Doves and Pigeons

This group of doves and fancy pigeons include the many domesticated varieties that are kept especially for their appearance. They have been kept for thousands of years and now exist in a huge number of breeds and varieties. They are invariably seed-eating ground feeders with a preference for grain but will also take the occasional invertebrate such as insects, worms and snails. We only have to consider the city feral pigeons which survive on almost anything that is thrown out to them, but do not take this as a good example of a suitable balanced diet.

To maintain doves and fancy pigeons in the peak of health, a wide variety of grains should be offered. These may include millet, wheat, rice, peas, beans, maize, hemp and linseed but to get a good nutritional balance the proportions need to be carefully controlled.

Many keepers and breeders of these birds prefer to adopt one of the commercially prepared mixes, which have been well tried and proven to be successful. Haith's Dove and Pheasant Mix is such a mix and includes best English Wheat, Cut Maize, Pearl Barley, Milo and Dari as well as a few pheasant pellets and is ideally suited as a good general feed.

Many doves and fancy pigeons are free to roam returning to the security of their home to feed and roost and can benefit from the ability to forage naturally. They also find essential greenstuff and pick up a few insects along with grit and minerals as they peck around wherever they may land.

For birds that may be confined at certain times these food items must be replaced and greenfood, grits, minerals and insectivorous food should always be available. Haith's supply Oystershell Grit, Mineralised Tonic Grit and Cuttlefish Bone as aids to digestion at the same time providing a supply of essential calcium and other minerals, while Haith's Prosecto Insectivorous Mix will broaden the nutritional intake.
