Quail

The UK’s only migrant gamebird.

This small game-bird nests more frequently in crops of grass and corn in the southern half of England than elsewhere, but it is becoming increasingly scarce.

It resembles a tiny buff-coloured Partridge They have a distinctive sound “Kerr-ick” and if you hear this sound in late spring and summer coming from deep in a cornfield or vegetation it means a male Quail is in there and your best chance of seeing it is to wait it out.

They run along short grass or crops but they tend to crouch low when feeding or sit still when disturbed.

Their flight is very fast and short, and they are often particularly noisy at dusk.

If you are lucky enough you may see the bird scuffle across open ground.
