There are few things more satisfying or entertaining than having birds take to a nest box that you have put up. Ideally, no garden should be devoid of a bird house (or two), especially if there aren’t any trees with “natural” hollows. Why not save the birds some time and trouble by providing a ready to move into nest box?
National Nest Box Week is a traditional part of the birding calendar. It runs for a week from 14th February each year.
The Jackdaw (Corvus monedula) is the smallest member of the crow family. It has a dark grey to black plumage with a contrasting grey nape, light coloured eyes and a distinctive silvery sheen to the back of its head.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a medium-sized bird, and is one of two black and white woodpeckers that can be found in Britain.
This is a story about goodwill to all birds, not just our favourite garden bird. We all enjoy watching the Robins but there are plenty of other birds to love and welcome into our gardens during winter.
