Budgerigars

Haith's offer a very wide range of Budgerigar mixes, which have been recommended by the most successful breeders over the last 75+ years, and it is only the bird-keepers themselves who are able to champion one mix against another.

Most are very similar in their nutritional content of fats, carbohydrates and proteins but there are bound to be small differences in their vitamin and mineral content, which may account for preference of one mixture over another for certain types of bird. A brief description of each may help you to decide your preference.

Special Budgie is a high quality mixture of the best Canary and White Millet but requires a small and regular supplement of Budgie Tonic Food to ensure variety and a broader spectrum of vitamins and minerals.

Global Budgie is a good all-round mix with an extensive range of seeds offering the broadest range of vitamins and minerals. Budgie Breeders consists mainly of best Canadian Canary Seed with White Millet.

50/50 Budgie is a mix of equal quantities of best Canadian Canary Seed and Yellow Millet.

Bravo Budgie is a good mix that includes Groats as well as Canadian Canary and Red and Yellow Millets.

Budgie Tonic Food comprises a broad range of Millets along with Linseed, Niger, Rape and Groats all dressed with Aniseed Oil to give it its well-proven tonic and conditioning properties. Given regularly but sparingly it helps maintain birds in the peak of health. Leading up to the breeding season, budgerigars can benefit from Haith's Rearing and Condition Food and when they are on eggs until well after fledging, foods such as Haith's Egg Biscuit Food or Nectarblend along with a little Prosecto Insectivorous Mix are of enormous benefit to youngsters and parents alike.

Budgerigars should also be provided with a regular supply of fresh greenfood especially when they are feeding young and Millet Sprays suspended from the enclosure roof give hours of enjoyment to foraging birds.

As a general rule always offer Fine Oystershell Grit and Granulated Charcoal to aid the digestive process and Small Cuttlefish Bone to supply essential calcium. Other minerals may be made available from Haith's Mineralised Tonic Grit.

Pet Budgerigars require a similar diet to any other budgerigar housed in a cage; in particular they should not be fed high fat diets such as those containing Groats as it could result in birds going out of condition. Variety remains an essential part in maintaining good health along with Grit, Cuttlefish Bone and Granulated Charcoal.
