5 facts about the ____n
1. It's one of a kind: There are several different species in various parts of the world but none can match our version according to Bill Oddie: “The Australian ones are frankly a bit too fluffy; the African ones too flashy, and the American, too big.”
2. They’re friend and foe: They behave friendly, confiding and cheeky — all the things we like about them. And yet they are belligerent. Males are amongst the most aggressive of small birds and will fight rivals beak and claw.
3. They’re great providers: You may well see the males (during the breeding season) bringing food offerings to impress the female, as she trembles her wings and begs like a hungry chick.
4. They’re full of surprises: During the breading season, look out for newly fledged youngsters, all speckled like small thrushes, and listen for this bird’s wistful song that sounds more joyful in summer and sadder during the winter months.
5. It wouldn’t be Christmas without this bird taking a starring role on many Christmas cards.
