Try these 12 free fishing bait recipes

Wednesday, 10th December 2014

Following on from my bait making blogs, I thought that this time I would give you a few recipes for each of the new Robin Red base mixes. The flavours that I use come from the Nutrabaits stable (unless stated) as this is where my confidence lies.
The fish oil for all the baits is Cod Liver Oil brought from my local supermarket in 300ml bottles.

ROBIN RED & FISHMEAL BASE MIX
(5 eggs and approx 550gm of base mix)

The first recipe is an all time classic that has been catching fish for years:

4ml Cranberry
1ml Sweet Cajouser
15ml Fish Oil
4 gms GLME (green lipped mussel extract)
2 gms Betaine

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

4ml Cranberry
0.5ml Sweet Cajouser
5ml Fish Oil
2gms GLME
2gms Betaine

This is a very simple mix and not complicated in any way.

The next mix is a combination of flavours that is a personal favourite of mine:

6 ml Maple
6 ml Cream
2ml Cream Cajouser
10 drops of Black Pepper Essential Oil
2 gms of GLME
2 gms Betaine
2gms Cream Supersweet
15ml Fish Oil

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

3ml Maple
3ml Cream
0.5ml Cream cajouser
5 drops black pepper essential oil
5ml fish oil
2 gm GLME
2 gms betaine
2 gms cream supersweet

The reason I keep the GLME and betaine at the same level between base mix and hookbaits is that they are strong feeding stimulants. The cream supersweet in the last recipe is kept at the same level because, I’ve found that as well as being a feed stimulant it also combats - to a certain extent - any silt /weed odours seeping into the bait.

ROBIN RED & CHILLI BASE MIX

This is my personal favourite mix out of the three and as such I have used quite a few different flavour/flavour combinations with it, but here are my top three:
(5 eggs and approx 550gms of base mix)

6ml Fruit Special
2ml cream cajouser
1ml sweet cajouser
8 gms GLME
5 gms betaine
15ml fish oil

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

4ml fruit special
2ml cream cajouser
4 gms GLME
4gms betaine
5ml fish oil

Leave hookbaits to air-dry for a few days then - whilst in the hookbait pot - I add the 1ml of sweet cajouser and give the baits a bit of a shake.

NATURAL MIX
(5 eggs and approx 600gms of base mix)

The next recipe is the one that I will be using a lot more of next season and it’s what I call my “natural mix” even though is does contain synthetic flavours:

5 ml caviar
10 drops black pepper essential oil
3 ml shellfish sense appeal (Nash products)
15ml fish oil
40 ml liquid krill hydroslate (DNA baits)
10 gms GLME
10 gms powdered krill (DNA baits)
5 gms betaine

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

5ml caviar
10 drops black pepper essential oil
5 ml fish oil
4 gms GLME
4 gms powdered krill
4 gms betaine

The hookbaits are made without the liquid krill and shellfish sense appeal as these are added together and formed into a neat glug.

MY HOLIDAY MIX!

This is the mix that I take to France for my annual holiday and, like the very first recipe, it’s simplicity itself.

(5 eggs and approx 550 gms of basemix)

8 ml Blue Oyster
10 gms GLME
5 gms betaine
15ml fish oil

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

6ml Blue Oyster
4gms GLME
2 gms betaine
5 ml fish oil

Hookbaits are allowed to air-dry over a period of 2 weeks and then 1ml of Blue Oyster flavour applied directly into the bait pot 2 or 3 times before use.

ROBIN RED & GARLIC BASE MIX
(5 eggs = approx 600gms base mix)

When fishing silty or weedy waters I have not used any flavours with this mix as garlic is a great fish attractor anyway and it keeps unwanted smells at bay, but I have used a couple of different attractor packages for test purposes:

4 ml Fruit Special
4 ml Wonderfruit
2 ml cream cajouser
15 ml hemp oil
2 gms betaine

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

The only difference from the feed baits to the hookbaits is that the hemp oil is reduced to 5 ml.

This final recipe I shall give is a spicy attractor package:

6 ml Techni spice
2 ml spice cajouser
15ml chilli infused oil
2 gms betaine
5 gms GLME

HOOKBAITS
(single egg mix)

4 ml techni spice
1 ml spice cajouser
5 ml chilli infused oil
2 gms betaine
2 gms GLME

The egg content to the base mix ratio may change depending on the size of the eggs you use - I use supermarket value eggs. I hate to state the obvious but always make sure that you have enough base mix and additives to make your given bait.

And there we have it, a few winning recipes that will put fish on the bank for any angler. But, saying that, it is best to do your own field testing with attractor packages to get the perfect levels. A lot of anglers rush to blame there bait when not catching rather than look at the whole picture i.e. the fish may not even be feeding, you are not on fish, you are fishing in the wrong place within the swim. One other thing I will add is that although I have given recipes for each base mix there is nothing to stop you from using a recipe from 1 base mix on another base mix...

Happy Fishing
