This is a very sturdy timber house complete with Hedgehog friendly entrance tunnel and double-layer roof insulation. It's suitable for hibernation, breeding and summer shelter. The heavy construction from durable timbers gives strength and longevity ensuring the habitat gives year round protection. The box is very robust, and its tried and tested, all-screwed construction, withstands crushing and strimming. Completing the unit is a hinged door at the back for annual cleaning and inspection of sick or rescued hedgehogs.
Directions: Simply position it in a quiet sheltered spot in the garden, such as: under bushes, shrubs or hedged bottoms.
Height: 200mm, width 420mm: depth - 380mm.
Siting: Locate the hedgehog habitat within cover, such as a bank, wall or fence and out of the prevailing wind. Pile leaves and short grass around the house plus two hand fulls of short dry grass and leaves inside the box to encourage any visiting hedgehog to nest.
Monitoring & Inspection: After winter use, late March - early April, hedgehog houses should be cleaned in preparation for use. To make sure the box is not occupied, put a light obstruction in front of the entrance to see if it is pushed away during the night. Assuming the box is empty, clean it with an organic Pyrethrum powder, suitable for caged birds. Flea treatments for dogs and cats should not be used as they are too strong and may kill a hedgehog.

As I have been getting regular visits from a family of hedgehogs (mum and two young) I decided to prepare for when mum turfs the youngsters out and ordered this oak hedgehog house. The product arrived promptly and in good order. I followed the guidance notes and situated this well-constructed house under shrubbery with a covering of dry branches and leaves and left some Haith's hedgehog food and mealworm suet pellets at the entrance. I expected a season of investigation and a bit of activity around the entrance, so really didn't expect too much to begin with. Imagine my surprise when the very next night someone moved in!I am absolutely thrilled.
For those of you who might worry about your pets: I have two cats (trained to ignore birds I must add) who have made friends with the visitors and so are curious about the home, however you'll be glad to know that they are unable to get any further than sniffing around the outside. This fabulous little house is attractive and looks strong enough to withstand curious pets or inclement weather.
Along with a small bag of hedgehog food, this has turned out to be a great investment.
