Share your love of nature with us

Wednesday, 29th March 2017

For many people spring is their favourite season - it heralds the promise of new life with fresh sounds and colours after the darkness of winter.
We hope that you’ve had the chance to read our latest Haith's News Issue 17 titled “We need wildlife, and wildlife needs us”. Simon King touches upon the positive effects of watching wild birds. To re-cap, according to recent research based at the Environmental Sustainability Institute (University of Exeter), ‘watching birds near your home is good for your mental health. Researchers Dr Cox and Professor Kevin Gaston found that ‘watching birds makes people feel relaxed and connected to nature' (Cox and Gaston, 2016).

Anyone who regularly watches birds in their garden has known instinctively that it’s a rewarding pastime; however, the new research states that ‘People living in neighbourhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.’ Simon King goes on to highlight the positive effects of watching wild birds and concludes that we need wildlife, and wildlife needs us - a statement in which we can all hopefully agree on.
